Scene 2:
· Still a black and stormy night and conspirators are going to go to Caesar's house
· Calpurnia has a bad dream and tells him he can't go to the Capitol b/c she dreamed that from Caesar's statue blood was coming out from holes in his body (looks like was stabbed a lot) and people were washing there hands in his blood and smiling, but Caesar says he has to go out (ego!)
· Caesar's famous quote- the quote means that cowards die more than once b/c they are afraid of death (you are consuming death), but people who do not worry about death the only die once
· Caesar tells aurgurers to sacrifice an animal to see if he should go to the Capitol or not, and they don't find a heart in the animal. The priests say this is a sign not to go outside but Caesar says that it means that if he doesn't go outside then he would have no heart. Caesar's ego comes out and he says "danger" knows that Caesar is more dangerous than "danger". Calpurnia says his ego is over eating his level head. She tells him to tell all of the Senators that it is her fault that he can't go outside and he agrees to "humor" her (go along with it)
· Decius comes in and wants him to come to the Capitol but Caesar says he will not come (ego!) Caesar makes a mistake and tells Decius that he can't come b/c Calpurnia begs him not to but Decius says that he has the dream all wrong. He says the dream is a good thing and he flatters him and Caesars likes Decius story better than Calpurnia and agrees to go.
· Caesar believes that they are going to offer him the crown today
· Caesar tells Cinna, Metillus, Trebonius to stay close to him at the Capitol b/c he has to talk to them about business (Conspirators like this)
· Now at the Capitol where Artemidorus (a speech master who finds about conspiracy) writes Caesar a letter to warn him about what the conspirators are up too
· Portia knows about conspiracy b/c Brutus told her and is nervous and tells Lucius to run to the Capitol
· Soothsayer enters (guy who tells Caesar to "Beware of the Ides of March") and wants to talk to Caesar that might happen to him today
· Flourish- trumpets blast
· Sennet- trumpet blast
· Artemidorus poses a souter and tries to warn Caesar but Decius says Trebonius wants Caesar to read his letter 1st (made up letter to get Caesar to the Capitol fast so they can kill him) but Artemidorus says to Caesar that his letter might mean something more to him than Trebonius' but Caesar says things that touches "us" (meaning Caesar is the symbol of Rome) shall be last thing he read
· Popilius is a Senator that is not part of conspiracy
· Cassius shoes off Artemidorus and says not to do buisness on the street
· Popilius says farewell- can mean good-bye or to do good and hopes that your business goes well, but Cassius and Brutus thinks he knows what they are up too?
· Trebonius draws Antony away from Caesar
· They are going to kill Caesar by Casca signaling the others by drawing his dagger and they would surround him
· They are all starting to flatter him but Caesar say he can't be fooled by flattery
· Metillus' brother was banished from Rome and Metillus is bowing and being loyal to Caesar but Caesar says if you gravel @ my feet to let your brother return to Rome, he would kick you like you were a mutt. Caesar says he doesn't do anything wrong and makes no mistakes. Brutus moves in and gets the conservation going and so does Cassius (they are all begging Caesar to let Publius Cimber's return). They all crowd around him and Caesar compares himself to the North Star b/c it is constant and does not move and he is not changing his mind about Publius Cimber
· Casca gets sword ready and says let my hands do the talking and they all start stabbing him
-Caesar's final words: Et tu Brute? Then fall, Caesar, meaning if Brutus is on it too then Caesar must die
· Conspirators cry out in happiness but they watch out for Caesar's friends (Marc Antony), he would be the one who would revenge Caesar's death
-They shoe Plubis off to tell everyone the conspirators take full responsibility for his death
-Brutus shouts out to bathe hands in Caesar's blood (just like Calpurnia's dream)
· Cassius keeps saying that this a historic scene and a great part of history, and children will reenact this scene in the future (getting a big ego)
· Antony's servant enters and gets on knees lying out face down (prostrate) ands says if Brutus convinces Antony why Caesar had to die and that he will not hurt Antony then Antony will follow Brutus
-Brutus tells the servant to let him come and he is a good friend but Cassius says he hopes Brutus is right and that he is a good friend but scared that he is not trustworthy
· Antony reenters and looks at Caesar's body and says all of Caesar's work has come down to this. Antony says that he doesn't know what they intended so he says if you are going to kill me, kill me now, kill me in the same hour as Caesar (honor)
· Brutus says even though they look like murders, Antony does not know how they feel and they don't intend to kill Antony and they will tell why they killed Caesar after they calm everyone down
· Antony shakes all of conspirators hands and talks to Caesar and says this must hurt you a lot to see me making friends with the people who killed you
· Cassius says I know that you love Caesar but you are our friend or are you not? Antony says I am your friend but you still have to convince me and Brutus says we will
· Antony asks for a eulogy for Caesar and Brutus says sure but Cassius says to Brutus are you crazy, Antony might turn on us but Brutus says he will talk to the people 1st and Brutus says that he will say to the people that we gave permission to let Antony talk but Cassius is still upset
· Brutus tells Antony 1. You can't blame us 2. Conspirators gave you permission to speak 3. You have to talk 2nd
· Antony talks to a Octavius Caesar's (Caesar's adopted son) servant and is trying to figure out how the people feel about Caesar's death
· Citizens wants an explanation about Caesar's death and Cassius and Brutus will tell
· Citizens are going to compare Brutus' and Cassius' stories
· Brutus says that he loved Caesar but he loved Rome more (PATRIOTISM!)
-Antony enters with Caesar's body and Brutus said that if the country wanted him to die he would kill himself for the good of the country (PATRIOT!)
-Antony is going to speak to the crowd but the citizens like Brutus and don't like Caesar now
· Antony speaks famous speech: He tells the crowd that he has come to bury Caesar not to praise him. Antony says that Brutus thinks that Caesar was ambitious and that is too bad, but Antony disagrees (keeps referring to Brutus and conspirators as honorable men). He makes a long speech about how Caesar was not ambitious and he asks the citizens why they don't love Caesar anymore and Antony makes a dramatic pause to let what he just said sink into the crowd
· Crowd trickles: 1st the love Caesar, than they love Brutus, now they love Antony
· Antony keeps contradicting Cassius and Brutus but keeps saying they are honorable men
· Antony talks again and shows crowd Caesar's will but he says he can't read it to them b/c it would be wrong (the crowd would go kiss Caesar's feet b/c they would fine out how much Caesar loved Romans)
· Crowd wants Antony to read the will and Antony says that he can't tell them that Romans are Caesar's heirs and that they would hate the conspirators if he read it
· Crowd hates the conspirators now b/c of a little inheritance from Caesar
· The crowd forms a ring around Caesar's body and Antony holds up Caesar's mantle (cloak) and shows all the holes that went through the cloak and named all the conspirators who stabbed Caesar (trying to make conspirators look like murders not purgers)
· The thing that broke Caesar's heart was not the daggers but seeing Brutus, his friend, in on the conspiracy too (INGRATITUDE)
· Antony is getting the crowd mad @ the conspirators and is stirring up the crowd to go and get the conspirators and he says that the does not have the power to stir up people but Brutus does (Antony really does have the power to!)
· Antony reads the will and says that Caesar was going to give 75 drachmas (coins) to every man in Rome and he was going to turn his estate into a park
· Citizens are going to go burn Caesar's body and take the limbs they use to cremate Caesar to burn the conspirators houses
· The mob of citizens are running around everywhere (Antony said he was going to bury Caesar but now they are cremating him)
· Mob chases Brutus and Cassius out of Rome
· Octavius and Antony are going to meet probably to talk about who is going to be king next
· Mob is so crazy for blood and are going to burn all of the conspirators; they kill Cinna the poet who is not Cinna the conspirator b/c they are so crazy
Wow that is a lot of notes! That is all of the notes from act I II and III. I suggest that for studying the test look at your
vocab and quotes sheet he gave you, (of course!) for short answer look at old quizzes, look at the notes above, and for the essay I suggest reviewing POWER and how a crowd of people can change their minds…. Enjoy!
